“Merahrah Bread”: The Political Economy of Food Sovereignty in Egypt
Keywords:
Egypt, Political Economy, Food SovereigntyAbstract
The book examines the concept of food sovereignty, an often overlooked, resistance-based idea rooted in people’s everyday struggles against impoverishment and austerity. It highlights how agricultural sovereignty intersects with demands for radical democracy and social justice in the Arab region, especially after the Arab Spring. Drawing on field evidence, the book raises a critical call against neoliberal policies shaping Egypt’s agricultural economy and sheds light on the neglected, impoverished rural communities of Upper Egypt.
