Abstract

This research handbook on civil–military relations begins from an understanding of the field’s complexity and the diversity of approaches within it, reflected in its wide range of authors and topics. It comprises twenty-four chapters written by thirty-one scholars from Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa. The editors argue that, unlike previous literature dominated by country-specific case studies, this volume stands out for its methodological and thematic organization: each section addresses key issues through contributions by leading experts. What distinguishes these works from earlier studies is their special attention to existing gaps in the literature, the introduction of new research questions, and the effort to propose solutions to unresolved problems across various areas of inquiry.
