الملخص

رُسمت صورة نمطية عن مدن الخليج؛ أنها مدن استثنائية ومستقبلية، وفي مقابل هذا الاحتفاء تسود تصورات، أغلبها استشراقيّ، تؤكد التخلّف الاجتماعي والسياسي وانعدام المساواة فضلًا عن التبعية الثقافية للغرب. ولكن بدلًا من استخدام الخليج مثالًا لإصدار أحكام قيمية، يمكن أن يعتبر الأكاديميون والباحثون في الدراسات المدينية مدن الخليج نماذج جديدة لفهم الاتجاهات التمدينية الصاعدة، ويمكنهم أن يلاحظوا، على نحو خاص، كيف تَعبُر هذه المشروعات الحدود الوطنية، وكيف تتفاعل مع البنى المادية والاجتماعية المحلية، التي تفرض عليها تطوير حلولٍ التفافية مؤسسية، تفضي، على نحو محايث، إلى أشكال مختلفة من التهجين. كما تُعلمنا التجربة التمدينية في الخليج حدود القدرات المالية وسلطتها في خلق بيئات ومجتمعات مدينية اصطناعية.
