The Makhzen in 19th Century Morocco: Beholder and Beheld

Abstract

The concept of the State/Makhzen in Morocco during the 19th century was controversial in colonialist historical writings. This article tries to enumerate the most important trends in these writings by exposing the texts, framing them and the contradictions they contain by comparing them with other texts that tried objectively to approach the nature of the complexities of the concept in the Moroccan case.
