يجيب مايكل وولزر في هذا الكتاب عن سؤال أساسي: لماذا أنجبت ثورات تحرّر وطني علمانية وحداثية في الجزائر وإسرائيل والهند ثورات دينية مضادّة؟ يعتبر الكاتب أن الحركات التي قادت التحرير في هذه البلدان تحرّرية liberationist ومختلفة عن الحركات التحريرية والقومية في أنها تزاوج في برامجها بين مقتضى التحرّر من الاستعمار ومطلبي الديمقراطية والعلمانية. وتكمن مفارقة التحرر في أن النخب القائدة تريد تحرير شعب من التخلف وإدخاله الحداثة، في حين أنه لم يكن متحمسًا لمشروع التغيير ذاك، وهو ما يفسر في رأيه العودة الكاسحة إلى ظاهرة الإحيائية الدينية في هذه البلدان الثلاثة؛ فالنخب العَلمانية والحداثية التي قادت عمليتي التحرير والتحرّر أخطأت في تقدير مدى تغلغل الشعور الديني داخل المجتمع بإقصائها القوى الدينية المحافظة من عملية البناء الوطني والتحديث المجتمعي بدل استيعابها في مشروع بناء الدولة وحملها على قبول التحديث والتغيير. ويناقش المقال وجاهة تفسير وولزر صعود الإحيائية الدينية في هذه البلدان الثلاثة، وينقد جمعه بين الصهيونية وحركتي التحرير الوطني الجزائرية والهندية.
