للقدس تاريخ تليد، يعود إلى آلاف السنين، كان موقعها مسكونًا ومأهولًا قبل قرون من ظهور الأديان الإبراهيمية الثلاثة، وفيها قامت مجتمعات وعاشت شعوب، نطقت بلغات وطقوس اجتماعية ودينية مختلفة. لكن ترتبط مركزية المدينة/ الموقع، إلى درجة كبرى، بصِلتها بالأديان الثلاثة؛ اليهودية أولًا، ثم المسيحية، ثم الإسلام. لكنها، بوصفها مدينة وفضاءً اجتماعيًا ثقافيًا واقتصاديًا أيضًا، سابقةٌ على علاقتها بهذه الأديان التي ارتبطت المدينة بها كونها موجودة مدينةً أولًا، قبل أن تكون موقعًا دينيًا، حتى إن تغيّر اسمها عبر الأزمان.
