  10. يستخدم معظم المؤلفين مصطلح "مبدأ" سواء بأهلية أو من دونها. فعند مناقشة التضامن في القانون الدولي يستخدم وولفروم مصطلح "مبدأ بنيوي". أما ويلنز فيستخدم مصطلح "مبدأ دستوري". ومن الناحية اللغوية أيضا يختلف التضامن بين الاصطلاح الألماني للتضامن Solidaritätsprinzip الذي هو نتيجة لانتقاله من الاصطلاح الفرنسي principe de solidarité، إذ لاحظ توماس فيغل أنّ المفهوم ظهر في سياقات لغتين من اللغات والثقافات المختلفة تاريخيًا، انظر: Holger P.
