الملخص

يمكن اقتفاء أصل أكثر فهوم مصطلح "المجتمع المدني" تأثيرًا في ما وُصِ ف ب "أمركة" المفهوم خلال العقدين الماضيين. فمن خلال توظيف هذا المفهوم التوكيفيلي الجديد عن "المجتمع المدني"، يجري تصميم فضاء اجتماعي جديد في الجنوب الكبير. ومع التدفق المتزايد بين النظريات والمعرفة الأكاديمية من جهة، وعالم وكالات المساعدات والسياسات والسياسة العملية من جهة أخرى، صار المجتمع المدني وسيلة لتحقيق غاية - الدمقرطة، أو النمو الاقتصادي، أو التنمية المستدامة - لا غاية في حد ذاته.
