The Palestine Question and Abdallah Laroui's Historicism

Abstract

This study offers a comprehensive critical reading of Abdullah Laroui’s approach to the Palestine question, based on his dynamic historicist method, which interprets historical calamities such as the Nakba and the 1967 defeat as moments of accountability and deconstructs the logic of colonial Zionist ideology. Laroui critiques rigid traditional Arab discourse and calls for an epistemological break with inherited modes of thought. Instead, he advocates for the pragmatic adoption of Western analytical tools (particularly Marxism) to create New rights and modernize Arab intellectual consciousness. Through a contemporary reading of Laroui’s texts, the analysis considers how historical defeats can become catalysts for intellectual transformation. It also places Laroui’s perspective in critical dialogue with Edward Said’s postcolonial approach, highlighting both shared concerns regarding Western hegemony and differences in methodology. The study concludes that Laroui’s internal critique and Said’s external critique offer complementary frameworks for understanding the Palestinian question as an intellectual, political, and cultural crisis, requiring a dual transformation that transcends both stagnation and dependency.
