A Thematic Reading of Ancient Historical Geography: North Africa through Pliny's Natural History as a Case Study

Abstract

During the 15 th century, a movement to translate Greek and Roman books began in Europe. Written Greek and Roman patrimony formed an important intellectual foundation for modern Western civilization. These translations contributed to shaping awareness of the Other and its geography. This paper sheds light on the fifth book of Pliny the Elder's Natural History as a model for ancient sources. It attempts to shape an understanding of the perception he formed of ancient North Africa on both the natural and human levels, through a thematic analysis of the text of the book. Finally, the paper considers how this influenced the formation of the modern West's vision of North Africa and contributed to fuelling its colonial projects.

  6. الكتاب عبارة عن موسوعة ألّفها بلينيوس الشيخ في عام 79 م وأهداها إلى القيصر تيتوس Titus، وتتكوّن من 37 كتابًا في مجالات علمية منوعة، وقد كانت موضوع دراسات وبحوث ودراسات تحقيقية عدة، ويُعتبر من أهم المصادر الأدبية التي كُتبت عن شمال أفريقيا القديم على الإطلاق، باعتبار كم المعطيات التي جاء بها، وقيمتها العلمية. خضع الكتاب لدراسات وتحقيقات عدة لتأكيد صحة نسخ الكتاب المخطوطة التي اعتُمد عليها في الترجمة، ومن ذلك دراسة الباحثة إليزا لوناتي: Elisa Lonati, "Retour sur l'identification de la Naturalis historia de Pline L'Ancien corrigée par Robert de Torigni," Tabularia: Sources écrites des mondes normands médiévaux , CRAHAM - Centre Michel de Boüard (2023) ; وأيضًا مقدمة الترجمة الفرنسية التي اعتمدتها: Pline L'Ancien, L' Histoire naturelle de Pline , Littre Émile (trad.)   7. لُِّقِب بلينيوس بالشيخ أو الكبير، تمييزًا له من ابن أخته بلينيوس الثاني، أو الصغير، واسمه الكامل كايوس بلينيوس سيكوندوس Secundus Plinius Caius، اُّتُِف ق على أن ولادته كانت في عام 23 م، واختُِل ف حول مكانها بالتحديد، فهناك من قال إنه وُلد في فيروناِVérona، وهناك من قال في نوفوكوموم Novocomum، تدرّج في المسؤوليات، من الجيش إلى إدارة مالية المقاطعة الإسبانية، إلى تعيينه قائدًا لأسطول ميناء ميزين Misène الذي ضم العديد من السفن. وفي عام 79 م حين بلغ سَّنَ الخامسة والخمسين، أهدى مؤلفه التاريخ الطبيعيإلى الإمبراطور تيتوس قيصر، وقد ضم 37 كتابًا، وكان الناجي الوحيد من بين مؤلفاته كلها.
